What it is

A certified translation (certified translation) is the complete translation of the document accompanied by a signed statement of accuracy, in which the translator attests to being fluent in both languages and that the translation faithfully matches the original.

When it is used

  • United States: USCIS (US immigration), universities and credential evaluators usually accept certified translations;
  • Universities and companies abroad: for enrolment, selection processes, hiring and exchange programs;
  • Other countries and institutions that require a translation with the translator's formal responsibility, without requiring a Brazilian sworn translation.

What you get

  • The complete translation, with a layout faithful to the original (stamps, seals and signatures indicated);
  • The statement of accuracy (Certificate of Translation Accuracy), dated and signed;
  • Delivery as a PDF by email, or printed if the institution requires it.
Please note: some authorities require a translator accredited in their own country, as in Canada (Ontario and Quebec) and Australia (NAATI). In these cases, a general certified translation may not be accepted. Before ordering, confirm the institution's requirements. If in doubt, send us the list and we'll advise you.

Certified or sworn?

A sworn translation is done by a Brazilian sworn public translator and has legal validity. It is required by Brazilian authorities and accepted in many countries, especially with the Hague Apostille. A certified translation is the right choice when the institution only asks for the translator's statement of accuracy, and it has no official validity in Brazil. Not sure which one you need? Send us the receiving institution's list of requirements and we'll point you in the right direction, free of charge.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a certified translation accepted by USCIS?

Generally, yes. USCIS requires a complete English translation with the translator's statement certifying competence in both languages and the accuracy of the translation. Always check the instructions for your form or case.

Is a certified translation valid in Brazil?

Not for Brazilian official bodies. Notary offices, universities, the Federal Police and the Commercial Registry require a sworn translation.

Can I send a photo of the document?

Yes. For the quote, a clear photo or PDF is enough. For the translation, the translator works from the digital copy of the document.
